One of the most impressive Moustaches in the history of heavy metal mockumentaries has to be that of Derek Albion Smalls (played by Harry Shearer) from the film This is Spinal Tap. Playing alongside his clean shaved bandmates Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins, Smalls (Bass Guitar) presented an impressive 70’s style horseshoe stache.

Smalls character appears in part to be a satire of Lemmy from Motörhead, who wore a similar mutton chop beard. His on-stage mannerisms resemble those of fellow bass player Steve Dawson from the band Saxon.

Although the film, This is Spinal Tap was a mockumentary, the Heavy Metal Played by the band, and the hilarity that ensued during the course of the film was definitely real. With a variety of incidents involving Smalls, including being trapped in an alien pod prop for an entire song, and having an interesting experience involving a metal detector and a tin foil wrapped cucumber:

Derek Smalls is a great example of a fine Heavy Metal Musician, and a fine wearer of a marvellous soup strainer.  If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the full film, This is Spinal Tap! Check out the trailer below:
