2014 has come and gone, but it did give us a huge selection of fine music from around the globe. Below are some of my favourite tracks from the year. Check them out below.
What were your favourite songs of 2014?
Slipknot – The Devil in I
The long awaited follow up album to 2008’s All Hope Is Gone, .5: The Gray Chapter was the highlight release of 2014 for me, and the second single from the album The Devil in I, is a killer track with a stunning video depicting the rebirth of the remaining 7 members of Slipknot and the initiation of the two new members.
Killer Be Killed – Wings of Feather and Wax
The latest American metal supergroup featuring Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, Sepultura), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan) and Dave Elitch (The Mars Volta). Originally the brain child of Max & Greg back in 2011, the band slowly started working on material and Troy and Dave eventually joined.
In a press release, Puciato characterizes the style, “It’s a bit of Sabbath-y doom, a bit of thrash, a bit of hardcore and punk”. Check out the video for Wings of Feather and Wax below.
Shihad – FVEY
The second single from Shihad‘s ninth album of the same name, FVEY is a reference to “Five Eyes”, often abbreviated as FVEY, an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
This is easily Shihad’s angriest album yet, and another pearler produced by Killing Joke‘s Jaz Coleman.
Royal Blood – Little Monster
Forming in 2013 out of England back in 2013, they have since been taking over the modern rock world in 2014. Their blend of garage and blues rock has had rave reviews from critics worldwide and are being touted as the saviours of modern rock.
Devilskin – Vessel
Easily the best band to come out of Hamilton ever, and the greatest NZ Metal band of 2014. Their debut album We Rise took over the New Zealand album charts and their seemingly unending stream of hit singles combined with a run of successful national tours has made them a force to be reckoned with.
Check out my favourite track from the album, Vessel.
Steel Panther – Gloryhole
Anything that Gene Simmon’s says about be rock being dead is bullshit, and Steel Panther is proof of this. Bringing back classic hair/glam metal with a full on comedic twist, Steel Panther released their third full length album All You Can Eat, and proved the shtick of the band has definitely not grown old.
And the release of the single and video for Gloryhole proves that Steel Panther just don’t give a fuck about what anyone thinks about them, their music or what they want to do. Be warned, this video is pretty filthy.
Mastodon – High Road
The masters of sludge & prog metal, Mastodon, released their sixth full length studio album Once More Round The Sun, and High Road was the first single released from the album. Continuing their reputation of releasing quality records, Mastodon have not disappointed fans with this release.
Check out the awesome video for High Road below.
Faith No More – Motherfucker
Considering the last track Faith No More released was in 1998, the expectation for the follow up release was high. After 16 years of waiting Motherfucker does not disappoint. With the growling tones and talent of Mike Patton at the forefront of this real reunion, the upcoming 2015 release of the new FNM album is damn exciting.
BONUS: Volbeat – Lola Montez
Although it was not a 2014 release, 2014 was the first time I had heard this insanely awesome track from Denmark’s Volbeat. You have to check out this track, in fact, the entire album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is a must hear album.
